Internet Video Baby Monitor vs. At Home Video Baby Monitors

Thanks for the comments on the Peanut Butter post yesterday! I don’t feel like a such a lunatic after all! I don’t know why peanut butter is so scary; it just is!

****************

When I was registering for my baby shower I had to make the decision of wanting the video monitor or just an audio one. I opted for the audio. It worked out great and we actually didn’t even use the monitor all that long. Caden sleeps in the bedroom next to ours so hearing him wasn’t really ever an issue.

But now as Caden gets older I need to see him more then ever. I realized this just a few weeks ago, when I thought he was sleeping and I went in to cover him back up and sure enough he saw me and started crying. He’ll also wake up for a few minutes around 10pm and I find myself at his door and he’s still snoozing away.  Even in the morning he’ll wake up and fall right back to sleep for another half hour; I get so annoyed when I have to drag my butt out of bed for no reason. (yes, I’m still working on this morning person thing.)  If I could just see him I knew it would just be a lot easier and I wouldn’t end up interrupting his sleep.

So naturally, I started researching videos. But now the option really isn’t if you should get a video or audio. Now it’s; Do you want an internet video or just an at home video?

Internet video monitors. These are awesome, you can log onto your iPhone, iPad or computer anywhere in the world and check up on your little one. If you don’t know; we are a huge apple family and I just think this is awesome. Some people use this as a home security system as well.

At home monitors. With these monitors you can either get a LCD screen that you can put in your bedroom or kitchen or a handheld device you can take with you around the house.

There are pros and cons of each. I love the fact that you can sign in anywhere and check on your sitter and baby. But on the other hand I don’t really know if it’s necessary. It would be cool to be able to check on your house while your gone but they have this option with home security systems as well.  And I feel like I do need to have some trust in the person that is sitting for me. Do I really want to be able to watch their every move? Not really. I mean I don’t need to see them picking their nose. Just saying. :)

After much consideration, I decided to go with the Summer Infant Privacy Plus Slim and Secure monitor, because everyone raved about Summer Infant and this particular monitor is capable of adding 3 more cameras which is awesome when baby #2 comes along. It’s been great so far and now I can keep an eye on CK when he decides to scale his crib slates!

What’s your thoughts on Internet Vs At Home?

I have the same monitor and I just love it! In your post you stated that you will not want an internet video monitor because you need to trust the person that babysit for you. We had a nanny that I trusted (or I thought I did) to watch my daughter (8 months old at the time). After a few months, I found out that she will leave my daughter unattended for extended period of time. I wished I had a video monitor then. I may be paranoid but I feel like you cannot trust anyone (except your family and friends) with your kid. It seems to be easy to give a good impression and be totally different when the parents are not around. Just my thoughts! Caden is totally adorable!

Yah I don’t think I would want to spy on a sitter. I wouldn’t have wanted someone watching me when I was a babysitter. Then again, our friends caught their sitter stealing jewelry on camera. Sigh.

Really? I’ve heard a lot of stories like that. Don’t these kids know now a days that cameras could be anywhere. Even in teddy bear’s eyes! I know that once we buy our house we’ll have a security system / cameras for that kind of stuff. But I guess my point is I just don’t want to watch their every move ya know.
