Hi there! I’m Steph and I blog over at www.dairyfreeomnivore.com. I am the proud Mommy of 3 beautiful little girls ages 8, 6, and 2. They certainly keep my husband and me very busy, and we are on the go quite a bit!
My Littlest One very recently turned 2 years old and with her getting older the contents of our diaper bag is definitely changing. Since she is our 3rd we are well practiced at this by now. At this point packing my diaper bag is second nature, it has been a regular “accessory” of mine for the past 8 years. I keep it packed and on a doorknob in the kitchen ready to grab and go at a moments notice. The only thing I have to add are fresh drink cups.
When I was first asked to write this post I told my husband I would need to get a new bag because the one I have is actually 8 years old. My vanity almost got the best of me for this post, but then I thought, “why not just go with our tried and true bag, the one that has seen us through 3 kids?” It’s not very pretty, it’s probably completely out of style, but it is the only one that has lasted through all three of our girls. It’s been everywhere with us- up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Over the past 8 years we have tried several kinds- backpacks, over the shoulder, big ones, small ones, fancy ones… this is the one that we always go back to. It’s been spilled in and on, run over by the stroller, rained on, run through the washer and dryer on several occasions. It is pretty much indestructible. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy this bag. In my opinion diaper bags are about functionality and dependability.
My husband used to joke that when I packed us up to go anywhere the only thing I would leave home was the kitchen sink. I think that over the years I have gotten much better at bringing only the necessities with us. This is what we bring with us whenever we leave the house with the toddler for under 6 hours:
- 4-6 Diapers ( we never use that many, I just always have extras in the bag)
- Changing pad
- 2 drinks: Juice and water ( we can refill if needed while we are out)
- Snacks- usually 2 squeezable fruits and Earth’s Best Organic Pop Snacks- something easy, not messy, and shelf stable
- Hand Sanitizer and Wet Ones
- Change of clothes
- Sunscreen for face and body
- Sun Hat
- Sunglasses (She doesn’t keep them on, but we try)
- Something to entertain her- usually a book, or something to draw with.
I never actually carry this bag either. We have gotten in the habit over the years of hanging it on the stroller. It makes life so much easier! (Especially since I usually have a camera in my hand.)
If we are going to be out for more than 6 hours visiting friends or family I pack a larger bag:
I include most of the same things, but I add in an extra change of clothes (that totals 2 complete outfits), pajamas, her blanket and stuffed Kitty in case we are out late and she wants to go to bed, and maybe extra snacks.
I also keep a bag in the car at all times with books, crayons, High Five Magazines, a few spare diapers, trash bags for wet or stinky clothes, Lysol spray, and DVD’s ( yes, we have a DVD player in our car. It is a lifesaver on long car trips with 3 kids! The rule is if they don’t get to use it unless we will be in the car for more than an hour.)
So that’s it. Nothing fancy, just the basics. At least for our family. It is a lot easier to travel with her now that she is getting older. The contents of the bag will change a little depending on the seasons of course. In the colder months the summer gear is replaced with a hat and mittens. And as you can see I do not keep my own personal items in the diaper bag. I always just carry a purse. (I keep things in my purse like my EpiPen that I do not want her getting her little hands on.)
Well here we are … after 6 Weeks, 5 Guest Posts and numerous baby items “What’s in My Diaper Bag” Mini series has come to an end. I hope you all enjoyed reading the posts from our guests and hopefully took something away from each. And of course a very special Thank You to all our guests for helping me out on this great series!
